Cancellation letter template for a supplementary cover by 30 September

Supplementary cover (LCA/VVG) generally requires 3 months' notice: for an end on 31 December, the letter must go out before 30 September. Here is how, with a template to sign.

The 3-month notice specific to the LCA/VVG

Supplementary insurance falls under the Insurance Contract Act (LCA/VVG). For an expiry on 31 December, the usual 3-month notice sets the deadline at 30 September: your cancellation must therefore be sent in time to meet this deadline. This calendar is entirely separate from that of basic insurance, which is cancelled for 1 January with receipt by 30 November.

Many people miss their exit from supplementary cover by reasoning as for the basic one. Note the difference clearly: 30 September for the supplementary cover, 30 November for the basic one.

This confusion of dates is the leading cause of rejected cancellations. If you cancel the basic and supplementary covers at the same time, handle each contract with its own letter and its own calendar, rather than sending a single request that would mistakenly apply the wrong deadline to one of the two covers.

Checking the expiry and minimum term

Not all LCA/VVG contracts expire on 31 December, and some impose a multi-year minimum term. Before sending, open your general conditions (CGA/AVB) to confirm the real expiry date and the notice period applicable to your product. If a minimum term is still running, you can only cancel at its end, except in the case of an extraordinary cancellation.

A premium increase notified by the insurer may open an extraordinary right of cancellation outside the term, within a short period after the notification: check what your contract provides.

Writing the letter for 30 September

State your identity, policy number, the supplementary product concerned and the effective date (often 31 December), and sign. Send by registered mail to have proof of receipt and keep a copy. Since the deadline is calculated on receipt, do not wait until 30 September to post.

Good to know

The 3-month notice does not apply to basic insurance: do not confuse 30 September (supplementary cover LCA/VVG) with 30 November (basic insurance KVG/LAMal).

Questions fréquentes

Why 30 September and not 30 November?
Because supplementary cover (LCA/VVG) requires 3 months' notice before the annual expiry, often set at 31 December. 30 November concerns basic insurance (KVG/LAMal).
And if my contract has a minimum term?
You can only cancel at the end of that multi-year minimum term, except for an extraordinary cancellation provided by the contract. Your CGA/AVB state the date.
Does a premium increase change this deadline?
It may open an extraordinary cancellation outside the term, within a short period after the notification, depending on your contract. Otherwise the 3-month notice applies.
Does 30 September apply to all supplementary covers?
It is the most common case for an expiry on 31 December, but always check your CGA/AVB: some policies have another expiry or a minimum term.
