Cancelling basic insurance (LAMal)

Basic insurance is mandatory in Switzerland, but you are free to change it every year. Here are the essential rules, without jargon.

Deadlines to remember

Ordinary cancellation: letter received by the insurer no later than 30 November, for a change as of 1 January.
You stay insured without interruption: the new insurer must confirm your membership before the end of the previous contract.
If a premium increase is announced, a special deadline may apply (see the "premium increase" situation).

★ Good to know

You can never be refused for basic insurance: all insurers must accept you, whatever your state of health.
