Cancel only the supplementary insurance and keep basic insurance

Basic and supplementary insurance are two separate contracts, even with a single insurer. Here is how to cancel only the supplementary insurance (LCA/VVG) while keeping your basic insurance (KVG/LAMal).

Two independent contracts, even under one name

Basic insurance (KVG/LAMal) and supplementary insurance (LCA/VVG) fall under two different legal regimes: one is compulsory and governed by public law, the other optional and governed by private law. Even when you pay a single premium to a single insurer, these are two policies you can manage separately. You can therefore leave the supplementary cover while staying insured for the basic cover with the same body.

This is a common choice: people want to lighten their premiums by dropping a supplementary cover that has become unnecessary, without touching the compulsory insurance, which remains indispensable and continuous.

The deadline specific to supplementary insurance

Supplementary insurance follows its own rules. The usual notice period is 3 months before the annual expiry, which often sets the deadline at 30 September for an end on 31 December. But beware: some contracts provide for a multi-year minimum term. Before sending your letter, check your general insurance conditions (CGA/AVB) for the expiry and notice period applicable to your product.

Unlike basic insurance, the insurer has no obligation to admit you to supplementary cover: only cancel a useful cover after making sure you can replace it if needed.

Writing a letter that targets ONLY the supplementary cover

To avoid any confusion, the letter must explicitly name the supplementary product concerned (hospital, alternative medicine, dental…) and state that basic insurance is not affected. Include your policy number, the desired effective date and sign. Keep a copy and prefer registered mail to have proof of receipt.

You can generate a letter already worded in this sense here, to review and print. If on the contrary you want to keep ONLY the basic cover and leave your fund for the compulsory insurance, or cancel both, separate letters are required.

Good to know

Always state in the letter that you are cancelling the supplementary insurance (LCA/VVG) 'to the exclusion of the basic insurance (KVG/LAMal)': this prevents the insurer from cancelling the wrong contract.

Questions fréquentes

Can I keep the basic cover and cancel only the supplementary one with the same insurer?
Yes. They are legally separate contracts. You can cancel the supplementary cover and keep the basic one with the same body, provided you state it clearly in the letter.
What is the deadline to cancel only the supplementary cover?
As a rule, 3 months' notice before the annual expiry (often 30 September for an end on 31 December), subject to any multi-year minimum term in your CGA/AVB.
If I cancel the supplementary cover, will my basic premium rise?
No. The basic insurance premium does not depend on the supplementary cover. You simply stop paying the supplementary part.
Can I take out supplementary cover again later?
Yes, but the insurer is not obliged to admit you and may impose health reservations. Think it over before cancelling a cover you might want back.
