Frequently asked questions about health insurance cancellation
Clear answers to the questions Swiss policyholders most often ask.
What is the deadline to cancel my basic insurance?
Your cancellation letter must be received by your insurer no later than 30 November for a change as of 1 January. Plan the registered mailing in advance to be sure of the deadline.
Can a new insurer refuse me for basic insurance?
No. All insurers are required to accept every resident for basic insurance, regardless of age or state of health.
How do I cancel a supplementary insurance (LCA)?
First check the notice period and minimum term in your general terms. The expiry is often on 31 December with 3 months' notice. Unlike basic insurance, the insurer can refuse a new supplementary policy.
Should I cancel before or after taking out a policy elsewhere?
For basic insurance, take out the new insurer first: it confirms your membership, then you cancel the old one. For a supplementary policy, never cancel before you have written confirmation of the new one.
Does the letter have to be sent by registered post?
It is strongly recommended. Registered post proves that your insurer received your cancellation before the deadline, which protects you in case of dispute.
Is this service paid?
No. The explanations and the letter template are free. The connection with a FINMA-licensed partner broker is without obligation.
