Cancel only the basic insurance and keep the supplementary cover

Changing fund for compulsory insurance without touching your supplementary cover is possible. Here is how to cancel only the basic cover (KVG/LAMal) and keep your LCA/VVG.

Why basic and supplementary cover are cancelled separately

Basic insurance (KVG/LAMal) is identical in benefits from one insurer to another: only the premium amount changes. That is why many people change their basic fund to save money, while keeping their supplementary cover (LCA/VVG) where they are happy with the benefits. As these are two separate contracts, you can cancel one without the other.

Be aware, however, that some supplementary covers are marketed in connection with the basic cover of the same insurer. Leaving the basic cover does not force you to leave the supplementary one, but check your conditions to confirm that your LCA/VVG cover continues unchanged.

The 30 November deadline for the basic cover

For basic insurance, the ordinary cancellation must REACH the fund by 30 November (last working day) at the latest, for an effect on 1 January. The date of receipt is decisive, not the postmark: send by registered mail and allow for delivery time. Notice period: one month before expiry.

If you have the ordinary deductible (CHF 300) with free choice of doctor, a cancellation on 30 June is also possible, provided the letter is received by 31 March. This deadline concerns only the basic cover.

A letter that targets the basic cover without touching the LCA/VVG

The letter must state that you are cancelling the compulsory health care insurance (KVG/LAMal) only, mentioning your policy number and the effective date. State in black and white that the supplementary cover is not concerned, to avoid any cancellation by mistake. Date, sign and keep a copy.

You can generate a letter already worded to target the basic cover only here. If on the contrary you want to cancel only the supplementary cover, or both, use a letter suited to each case — two contracts, two letters, two deadlines.

Good to know

Keeping the supplementary cover with your old insurer while changing basic fund is possible: clearly state that you are cancelling 'the basic insurance only, to the exclusion of the supplementary cover'.

Questions fréquentes

Can I change basic fund and keep my current supplementary cover?
Yes. Basic and supplementary cover are independent contracts. You can cancel the basic cover with one insurer and keep the supplementary one with the same, provided you state it in the letter.
What is the deadline to cancel the basic cover?
The ordinary cancellation must be received by 30 November for an effect on 1 January. With the ordinary deductible and free choice of doctor, an exit on 30 June is also possible (letter received by 31 March).
Must I have found a new fund before cancelling the basic cover?
As basic insurance is compulsory and continuous, you must be affiliated elsewhere for 1 January. It is therefore wise to have confirmed your new fund before year-end.
Is my supplementary cover affected if I leave the basic one?
In principle no: they are two separate contracts. Still, check your conditions, as some supplementary covers are commercially tied to the basic cover of the same insurer.
