Is my cancellation accepted even if the new premium is more expensive?

The price of your future insurance has no bearing on your right to leave. Whether the new premium is lower or higher, the cancellation of basic insurance remains valid if it respects the form and the deadline. Here is why.

The price of the future fund is never a condition

For basic insurance, the validity of your cancellation does not depend in any way on the rate of your next fund. You may perfectly well move to a more expensive insurer: neither the old fund nor the new one can invoke the premium amount to block the exit or the affiliation. Free choice of fund is guaranteed.

This often happens when you change for a reason other than saving money: a specific insurance model (family doctor, HMO, Telmed, pharmacy), better service, or a move. The fact that the premium is higher does not call into question your right to cancel the old one.

What actually makes the cancellation valid

Only three elements matter. First, the form: a clear letter stating your identity, policy number, intention to cancel, effective date and signature. Second, the deadline: for an exit on 1 January, the cancellation must reach the fund by 30 November at the latest (one-month notice). Third, no arrears: unpaid premiums or cost-sharing can block the exit.

The amount of the new premium appears in none of these conditions. You do not even have to name your future fund for the cancellation to be valid — although being affiliated elsewhere for 1 January remains essential, as basic insurance is compulsory and continuous.

Choosing a higher premium with full awareness

Before signing elsewhere, compare calmly: with identical basic cover between funds (LAMal benefits are the same everywhere), a higher premium may be explained by the chosen model or the franchise. You can adjust your franchise (among the adult tiers 300, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500; 0 to 600 for children) or your model by 30 November.

If the increase comes from your current fund, it is notified to you by 31 October at the latest: you then have plenty of time to cancel for 1 January. Whether you move to a cheaper or a dearer fund, the procedure and deadlines are identical.

Good to know

The amount of the new premium is not among the conditions for a valid cancellation. What matters: a clear, signed letter received by 30 November at the latest for an exit on 1 January.

Questions fréquentes

Can my fund refuse my cancellation because I am moving to a dearer one?
No. The amount of the future premium is not among the conditions for validity. The fund cannot block an ordinary cancellation because your next insurer is more expensive.
Do I have to prove I am insured elsewhere?
No, that is not a condition of validity. But as basic insurance is compulsory and continuous, make sure to be affiliated with a new fund for 1 January.
Why change to a more expensive premium?
Often for another insurance model, better service, or after a move. As basic benefits are identical everywhere, the choice can rest on criteria other than price alone.
Does the deadline change if the premium is higher?
No. Whatever the rate of the future fund, the ordinary cancellation of basic insurance must be received by 30 November for an exit on 1 January.
